Meningitis

Meningitis is an infection in the brain which can occur at any age, but it is more devastating to the brain in a baby or young child. There are two types of meningitis, viral and bacterial. Viral meningitis is caused by a virus, and there is no specific treatment other than supportive treatment. Bacterial meningitis, which is caused one of several different types of common bacteria, can cause severe injury to the brain that requires prompt diagnosis and immediate treatment with antibiotics. Any significant delay in diagnosis and treatment will greatly increase the risk of severe long-term injury and a permanent disability in terms of brain function. The diagnosis is usually made by examining the spinal fluid that is obtained through a spinal tap, which is also known as a lumbar puncture.
